Air Purifiers
Buy and sell air purifiers in Panama.
When the cane around Natá is burnt in the field before cutting, smoke and flecks of black ash drift into the houses nearby, and a purifier with a decent carbon layer is what lets a bedroom smell of nothing at night. Room purifiers with true HEPA filters change hands new and pre-owned, along with small desktop and car units, ionizers and the ozone machines used to clear the smell from an empty room. On any of them the filter matters more than the badge, because it is the part that wears out and the part you keep paying for.

What a true HEPA filter does that an ozone box cannot:
it traps the fine particles in smoke, dust and pet dander as the fan pulls room air through dense pleated media, and they stay trapped. Most bedroom units back it with a pre-filter for hair and a layer of activated carbon for smells. Ionizer and plasma units charge particles so they settle on walls and furniture instead: quiet, no filter to buy, but the dust has only moved. Ozone generators are made to deodorise an empty room or a car, which then has to be aired before anyone goes back in. Plenty of cheap boxes sold as 3-in-1 combine HEPA, plasma and ozone, so read the switches: where someone sleeps, the ozone stays off. An inverter split advertised with a built-in purifying system only treats the air passing through its indoor unit, and belongs with the air conditioning units. A musty closet is a damp problem rather than an air problem, and the answer there is one of the dehumidifiers.
Cane-burning smoke and the carbon layer:
in Coclé the cane is burnt in the field before it is cut, and homes at the edge of the plantations around Natá and Aguadulce take the smoke on still evenings right through the harvest. HEPA catches the ash, but the smell is a gas and only carbon holds it. A unit with a thin sheet dusted with carbon will run clean and still leave the room smelling of a burnt field; one with a deep tray of carbon granules does far better and weighs more for it. Size it generously, too: the CADR on the box is measured at full speed, and a purifier turned down to its quiet night setting cleans much less.
The machine is cheap, the filter is the bill:
a bedroom-sized purifier with a true HEPA filter from Xiaomi, Levoit or Coway costs around $100 to $200 new, and its replacement filter around $30 to $60, due every six months to a year and sooner after a smoky harvest. Over three or four years the filters can cost more than the machine did, which makes the filter the honest measure of a used one. With a fresh filter fitted and an unopened spare in the box, a used purifier does nearly everything a new one does; with a filter that has done its year, take the price of a replacement off before you agree a figure.
What the filter drawer of a used purifier gives away:
open it first. Grey pleats are normal wear. A yellow-brown cast on the pre-filter and inside the housing means a smoker’s home or seasons of cane smoke, and the carbon behind it is spent. Check that the filter is the right part for that exact model and sits tight in its frame, because a loose fit lets air slip round the edges, and the compatible copies made for the best-selling Xiaomi and Levoit models vary a lot in how well they seal. Then run it on top speed: strong airflow at the outlet, an even hum, no rattle. On an ionizer or a 3-in-1, a sharp, chlorine-like smell means the ozone is running.
A purifier leaving the house with its spare filter:
give the model number from the label underneath, the room size it is rated for and when the current filter went in; a date written on the filter frame at each change is the simplest proof. Say where it ran, a smoker’s flat, a house with cats or a home beside the cane fields, because the carbon remembers all three. A photo of the filter out of the machine says more than any description, and an unopened spare in its box makes the sale far easier. Have it plugged in on top speed for whoever comes to collect, and hand over the remote and the manual: on many models the filter-reset step is hard to guess without them.
