Storage & Hard Drives

Buy and sell hard drives and SSDs in Panama.

A laptop that crawls through every start-up usually needs a solid-state drive rather than a replacement, and that swap is where most people start looking. Internal SSDs share the shelf with portable hard drives from Toshiba, WD or Seagate for backups, and with USB sticks and memory cards that are easy to fake. Some arrive sealed, others pre-owned from a PC that was upgraded. One local habit shapes the used side: so many Panamanian homes, condo lobbies and corner shops record their cameras to a DVR that a surveillance hard drive is a common leftover when the system is replaced.

SSDs and hard drives for different jobs:

a solid-state drive has no moving parts and is the one to run Windows or macOS from, because a computer boots and opens programs far faster on it. A hard drive still stores more for the money, so it lives on for backups, bulk storage in a desktop and the disk inside a camera recorder or a NAS. A portable SSD such as a Samsung T7 also survives knocks that would finish a portable hard drive.

Which SSD fits the slot you have:

an older laptop with a hard drive bay takes a SATA SSD the same size as the disk it replaces, the cheapest way to revive an old machine. Newer laptops use M.2, a card the size of a stick of gum, and the trap is that M.2 comes as SATA or NVMe: they look almost identical and many slots accept only one. Recent MacBooks and many thin laptops have storage soldered to the board, so the only upgrade is external. Before adding one to one of the desktops or a build from computer components, count the M.2 slots on the motherboard. A PS5 takes an NVMe drive only if it is a fast PCIe Gen4 model, ideally with a heatsink.

Surveillance drives that come out of DVR camera recorders:

camera recorders watch over a great many Panamanian homes, condo entrances and corner shops, and each one writes to a surveillance drive such as a WD Purple or a Seagate SkyHawk. When the cameras are upgraded the old drive gets sold off, and since it was built to record around the clock it suits another recorder better than your family photos. Format it inside the recorder before it changes hands, because it holds weeks of footage of somebody’s front door.

Why a healthy used SSD holds its price:

a 1TB SSD costs around $140 to $200 new in Panama, while a 1TB portable hard drive is closer to $55 to $75. Flash memory prices rise and fall with the chip market, and when they are up, a used SSD that still reports most of its health sells for not much less than a new one. A used hard drive drops further, because a motor’s remaining life is harder to read off a screen than an SSD’s wear.

Health readouts and clicking motors on second-hand drives:

ask the seller to open the maker’s app, such as Samsung Magician or WD Dashboard, or a free SMART tool, and show you the health status, the hours the drive has been powered on and, for an SSD, how much has been written to it. A Caution or Bad status on a hard drive means sectors are failing. Then listen: repeated clicking, or a disk that keeps spinning up and down, points to a damaged head.

The USB stick that claims more than it holds:

cheap flash drives, memory cards and so-called portable SSDs advertising huge capacities are the most faked thing in storage, often in convincing SanDisk or Samsung packaging. Their chip reports space it does not have, so they look the full size, then quietly corrupt files once the real space runs out. H2testw on Windows or F3 on a Mac fills the drive and reads it back, the only test that settles it.

Wiping a drive before someone else plugs it in:

a quick format leaves files that free recovery software can bring back, so copy off what you want and run a full format on a hard drive or the maker’s secure erase on an SSD. Photograph the label, add a screenshot of the health screen with the hours showing, and say whether it is SATA or NVMe, which M.2 length, and what it came out of. Most drives come up for sale after an upgrade, and an internal one cannot show that it works without a USB adapter or enclosure, so bring one to the handover in Tocumen and let the buyer’s own laptop read the full capacity there.
