Mobility Aids
Buy and sell mobility aids in Panama.
A walking aid in Panama City has to cope with the pavement as much as with the person using it: the smooth path along the Cinta Costera, the cobbles of Casco Viejo, then a kerb with no ramp and a lamp post in the middle of the walkway. At the heavy end sit power chairs and mobility scooters, where the batteries count for as much as the frame; at the light end, rollators, crutches and canes, new and pre-owned. Before you go to see one, ask for the seat width, the weight limit on the frame and whether it folds small enough for your car.

Mobility scooters and power wheelchairs:
both run on a motor and batteries. A scooter is steered with a tiller, like handlebars, and takes both hands. Three-wheel models turn tighter indoors; four-wheel ones sit steadier on broken paving. Travel scooters come apart into a seat, a battery pack and a frame in two halves that go into a boot one by one. A power wheelchair is driven from a joystick on the armrest and turns almost on the spot indoors, and the folding lithium versions close up much like a manual chair. Beds, hoists and commode chairs sit alongside under home medical equipment, the other half of medical and mobility.
Rollators, walking frames and wheel size on a Panama City pavement:
outdoors, the wheels matter more than the frame: a four-wheel rollator brings a seat, a basket and loop brakes, and small wheels jam on cracked paving, drain covers and the stones of Casco Viejo where larger ones roll over. A three-wheel rollator folds slimmer but has no seat, and a frame without wheels is lifted at every step and belongs indoors. Manual wheelchairs work the same way: small front castors drop into gaps a larger castor rides over, and solid rear tyres never puncture but send every bump into the seat. Measure that seat between the armrests and allow a flat hand’s room each side of the hips; heavy-duty chairs come wider.
Crutches, canes, knee scooters and transfer boards:
fit goes wrong most easily at the light end. Underarm crutches carry weight through the hand grips while forearm crutches have a cuff around the arm, so the hand can let go without the crutch falling. A cane with a four-foot base stands up on its own; a single-point cane cannot. A knee scooter carries one shin on a padded platform while the other foot pushes. A transfer board is for sliding across from a bed or a wheelchair to a car seat, and it is finished once it cracks or loses its slick surface.
What a folding wheelchair and a power chair are worth:
a plain folding wheelchair costs from under $200 new, which keeps a used one a modest sum decided by its tyres, castors and seat sling. Power chairs and scooters cost several times as much, and on a used one the batteries weigh on the price more than the age of the frame. Most run on a pair of sealed lead-acid batteries that last a year or two of regular use and are always replaced together, so tired batteries come off the asking price as the cost of a new pair. Lithium packs last longer and cost more to replace.
Batteries, castors and brake cables on a used one:
drive a scooter or power chair yourself, fully charged, up a slope and over a kerb. Cutting out under load, a shrunken range or a swollen battery case means the batteries are done. The charger should be the one made for that machine, and the freewheel lever should let it be pushed by hand. Push a manual chair briskly across a smooth floor: castors that shimmy or bearings that grind need replacing, and a chair that folds unevenly has a bent cross-brace. On a rollator, squeeze both brakes and lean on the parking lock. Crutch and cane tips worn smooth slip on wet tiles and cost little to renew.
Passing on a scooter, chair or rollator:
most come from someone who has moved on to a different aid or no longer needs one. Give the seat width, the weight limit from the label and the folded size. For anything powered, add the date stamped on the batteries, whether the charger is included and how far it goes on a full charge now. Photograph it open and folded, plus the tyres and the label. Then say how it travels: someone driving in from La Chorrera needs to know whether it fits a sedan boot folded or only in pieces, and whether anyone at your end can help lift the heaviest one.
