Hand & Nail Care

Salon menus list acrylic, polygel, rubber and soft gel, each with its own removal and its own maintenance a few weeks later. Plenty of what gets passed on comes out of that cycle, from an acrylic kit bought to stop paying for fills to a box of press-ons in sizes that never fitted. Nail polish, gel colours and the cuticle oil and hand cream that sit beside them turn up as well, many still sealed, some opened once to try a shade. Sealed is the easy part. Opened bottles and metal tools are judged on how they were kept.
Nail polish, gel, acrylic and press-ons:
what separates them is how they set and how they come off. Ordinary nail polish air-dries and lifts with remover. Gel colour and rubber or builder gel harden only under a UV or LED lamp, which is why the lamps sit in beauty tools and a gel bottle on its own is half a system. Acrylic is a powder picked up on the brush with a liquid monomer and needs no lamp; polygel comes in a tube, is shaped with a slip solution and goes back under the lamp. Press-on nails skip the chemistry: a ready-made set fixed with glue or adhesive tabs. Richer lotions than a hand cream belong in skin care and pedicure foot files sit with bath and shower.
A nail system you can keep up at home:
decide how long you want it to last and how you will take it off. Polish chips within days but costs nothing to remove. Gel lasts far longer and soaks off in acetone, provided your lamp cures it properly. Acrylic and polygel are extensions built over the nail; they grow out and need a fill or a full removal, and doing that badly at home is the usual way natural nails end up thin. Buy powder and liquid from the same line, because they are made to set together. A press-on set comes in numbered sizes, one per finger, so measure the widest part of each nail before choosing, and use tabs if you want them for a weekend and back in the box afterwards, glue if they have to stay on.
Boxed press-ons and the price of a fill:
a box of mass-made press-ons costs about $10 in Panama, under half the price of an acrylic fill, which runs from about $25 to $35 every few weeks in a Panama City salon. That sum is what sells home acrylic kits and press-ons in the first place, and why so many are passed on when the habit does not stick. What a kit is worth follows how much of it is untouched: a sealed box of press-ons, a hand-painted set made by a local nail artist, or an acrylic kit with its monomer still sealed, because the liquid is the first part to evaporate or get knocked over.
An opened acrylic kit, gel colours or press-ons out of the box:
start with the powder, which should pour loose; clumps mean it has taken on damp. Monomer should be clear, in a bottle that closes tightly, and once it turns yellow or thick it is past using. Gel colour keeps only away from light, so ask where the bottles were stored and for a cured swatch on a tip. Copies of salon gel and acrylic lines circulate with blurred print and no batch number, so compare the label with the maker’s own photos. A press-on set that has left its box should arrive cleaned of glue with every size present; one missing its thumbs means making them up from another box. Metal nippers and cuticle pushers from someone else are fine if they are stainless and come cleaned. Hand cream is worth taking sealed or nearly full in a tube, rarely as an opened tub.
A nail kit or press-on set, ready to list:
paint a swatch of every colour on a tip or a nail wheel and photograph it in daylight, because the colour in the bottle lies. Show the level in the monomer and polygel, list what the kit holds and what is opened, and say how it was stored: capped, and away from a sunny window. For press-ons, write the size of each nail in the set, whether it has been worn and how many times. If the kit came with a nail course and was only opened in class, say so; buyers take that as a kit with most of its contents left. Someone meeting you in Aguadulce for a press-on set will hold the thumb and little-finger nails against their own before paying, so bring the box with every size in its slot.
