About Puerto Armuelles:

Puerto Armuelles —officially Puerto Tomás Armuelles— is a city and corregimiento in Barú District, Chiriquí Province, located on the Pacific coast at the western extreme of the province, adjacent to the Costa Rica border. As the capital of Barú District, it is the main urban centre of western Chiriquí and the second-largest city in the province. It has a surface area of 124.1 square kilometres and a population of 12,249 according to the 2023 census, with a density of 98.7 inhabitants per square kilometre. The city is also known by its nicknames: “Rabo de Puerco” (Pig’s Tail), for the shape of the peninsula where it sits; “El Petrolero” (The Petroleum One), for its oil industry; and “Ciudad de las arenas” (City of Sands), for its beaches. The climate is tropical monsoon (Köppen classification Am), with warm temperatures and a marked dry season.

Puerto Armuelles’s history is deeply tied to the banana industry. In 1927, the United Fruit Company —later Chiquita Brands International— began building the city as an operations base for its banana plantations on the Burica peninsula. The city was named after Colonel Tomás Armuelles, a hero of the Coto War. For decades, Puerto Armuelles was a prosperous banana centre: the port exported bananas to the United States and Europe via United Fruit’s Great White Fleet, and the company built urban infrastructure —houses, schools, hospitals— for its workers. In 2003, Chiquita sold its local subsidiary and banana production declined, although local cooperatives have partially resumed the activity. The city obtained city status in 1990. Today, the revival of the banana industry is significant news for the area, with the creation of hundreds of direct and indirect jobs.

Puerto Armuelles’s economic identity goes beyond bananas. The city has two deep-water ports of different types: one for bananas and one for oil. About 7 kilometres south of the city, in Charco Azul bay, is the terminal of the Trans-Panama pipeline, with three docks to receive supertankers and tanks with total capacity of 2.5 million barrels of crude oil. This terminal has been used to transfer oil from supertankers to smaller vessels that can transit the Panama Canal, and later to ship crude in the reverse direction to Pacific Rim refineries. Additionally, the Puerto Barú project proposes a multi-purpose port with storage facilities, deepwater container, future cruise ship port and marina. The Barú Free Zone, established in 2001, promotes investment and regional trade by leveraging the Costa Rica border, creating an attractive environment for industrial, commercial and service companies.
